Navigating Risks and Revelations: My Journey from Solo Performer to New Victory Theater’s Inaugural Season Star

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]I recently had the pleasure of sharing my stories and insights in a conversation where I recounted a pivotal risk that changed the course of my career. Titled “Go big or go home,” it was 1996, and I’d been performing as a solo artist in schools and local venues. The newly opened New Victory Theater beckoned, and a brochure stirred a longing to grace its stage. Taking a chance, I called an acquaintance on the advisory board, leading to a connection with the person in charge of booking. This daring move resulted in joining the inaugural season and eventually creating Sofrito!, a Latin music/storytelling show that toured the country for over a decade. My journey began as a music therapist, working with diverse groups facing challenging situations. The courage of those individuals became the “wind beneath my wings.” Transitioning to a performing artist and keynote speaker, I learned to create safe and brave spaces for creative encounters and meaningful interactions. Reflecting on lessons learned, I share the backstory of unlearning early life traumas and insecurities. Despite earning a BA, MA, and Ph.D., self-doubt occasionally creeps in, but I’ve come to appreciate the value others see in me. Saying “YES” to opportunities, even when I don’t fully see them, has become a mantra for personal growth. Being a creative professional brings a multitude of rewards. I cherish the balance between personal expression and social utility, creating work that challenges and pleases me while uplifting, inspiring, and educating others. Join me as I offer insights into confidence, composure, culture, and deep creativity gained from touring with legends like Larry Harlow and Yomo Toro. This interview serves as an invitation to embrace risks, overcome insecurities, and find the true treasures in our professional lives.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_btn title=”Read the full article” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fcanvasrebel.com%2Fmeet-david-gonzalez%2F|target:_blank”][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Let me tell you something about my new project

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]Redemption/TIME” is a compelling and inspirational multimedia performance that brings together two extraordinary talents from different walks of life. Jimmy Santiago Baca, an accomplished American poet and memoirist, and Christian Howes, a renowned jazz violin virtuoso, have united their unique experiences and artistic prowess in a collaboration that transcends boundaries. Baca’s life story, marked by early challenges and a transformative journey from incarceration to literary recognition, resonates deeply with the theme of redemption. He’s a living testament to the power of self-improvement and creativity in the face of adversity. Howes, on the other hand, represents the world of music and artistry, demonstrating that even the darkest times can lead to incredible opportunities. Redemption/TIME” is not just a performance; it’s an anthem of contemporary America. Directed by Dr. David Gonzalez, this project combines the spoken word of Baca and the musical virtuosity of Howes to inspire a new generation. Their collaboration bridges the gap between poetry and music, offering hard-won life lessons and powerful voices to a broad audience. It’s a testament to resilience, transformation, and the enduring human spirit. Their message is clear: even in the face of adversity, redemption is possible, and creativity can be a beacon of hope. As a live performance and streaming experience, “Redemption/TIME” is a unique opportunity to witness the convergence of two remarkable artists who have overcome challenges and now strive to make a positive impact on the world. Their story is a testament to the importance of embracing the business side of one’s craft and creating opportunities. Get ready to be inspired and motivated by this extraordinary odyssey of redemption and creativity.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_video link=”https://youtu.be/HJXS5Ztk4vQ?si=ohYx1-Q2btWcMWCk”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_btn title=”Learn more about Redemption Time” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fredemptiontimeshow.com%2F|target:_blank”][/vc_column][/vc_row]

I encourage you to memorize your poem for a truly immersive experience and a tool for revision. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to elevate your poetry and join me on this creative journey. Mark your calendar for our workshops on December 1 and 8, followed by a memorable performance on the same evening. Come with one poem in hand and an open heart, dressed comfortably, and enjoy a light dinner along the way. Let’s make your words resonate on stage! From Page To Stage: Turning Poets Into Performers $0.00 FREE Two-Part Workshop + Performance Giving voice to written work can add layers of meaning while clarifying our intent and charging the inky symbols on the page with emotional and intellectual substance. In this free, three-part workshop, participants will work with award-winning performance poet, storyteller, and educator David Gonzalez to hone the skills needed to enliven the written page for the performance stage, then perform in front of an audience. In the first session, participants will learn the concepts of Physical Presence, Voice and Articulation, Dramatic Appropriateness, Evidence of Understanding, and Overall Performance. As homework, participants will be asked to memorize their poems. Though participants are encouraged to have a printed version of their poem available for back-up, reciting from memory results in a better audience experience and is also an effective revision tool. When reciting a work from memory, extraneous words fall away. Recitation also uses the same part of your brain as anxiety, effectively cancelling out nervousness. One week later, participants will gather again to share the results of their at-home practice and receive individualized feedback from Mr. Gonzalez in preparation for a public performance that same evening. The performance will begin with workshop participants and culiminate with Mr. Gonzalez reading selections from his 2022 collection of poetry titled Soundings. Please bring one poem to work on/perform, and wear loose-fitting clothing. Light dinner included. SCHEDULE 1st Workshop: Friday, December 1, 4-6 PM 2nd Workshop: Friday, December 8, 4-6 Dinner Break: Friday, December 8, 6-7 PM Performance: Friday, December 8, 7-9 PM[/vc_column_text][vc_btn title=”Register here” color=”orange” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fwww.poetrybarn.co%2Fpoetry-workshops%2Fpage-to-stage”][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Oh Hudson – “If you want to be universal start by painting your own village”

In their collaborative music play, David Gonzalez, Daniel Kelly, and Gretchen Koehler intricately weave together the rich tapestry of the Hudson Valley’s history using the powerful mediums of poetry and music. This creative endeavor embodies Tolstoi’s timeless wisdom: “if you want to be universal, start by painting your own village.” By delving deep into the local history and culture of the Hudson Valley, they manage to touch upon universal themes and emotions that resonate with audiences far and wide. Remembering Maxine Greene – a piece I did for Studio 360 a number of years ago.

I was lucky to count philosopher Maxine Greene as a teacher, mentor and friend.  Through her talks at the Lincoln Center Institute, her books (especially Releasing the Imagination, and Variations on a Blue Guitar), the art and education salons at her 5th Ave apartment, and good conversations over wine and coffee I grew as an artist, as an educator, as a human. Here is a tribute I produced for Studio 360 in the studios of WNYC a number of years ago.
